All Aboard! A Local's Guide to the Iconic Pichi Richi Railway

Experience the magic of the Ghan's original line. Discover the Afghan Express, the Coffee Pot, and the best steam train journeys from Port Augusta to Quorn.

Close your eyes for a second. Whistle. The hiss of steam. That coal-smoke tang you don’t get from a wall socket. Port Augusta didn’t happen by accident — it grew on the back of iron giants hauling people, wool, and dreams through country that doesn’t forgive shortcuts. Out of that story rolls the Pichi Richi Railway: part nostalgia, part bucket-list, and — if you time it right — the reason you add an extra night at Crossroads Ecomotel instead of racing off before breakfast.

The Afghan Express: your “must-do” day

If you only do one run, make it the Afghan Express — the full-day return from Port Augusta Railway Station to Quorn on the old Central Australia line (the route the Ghan ran before the new alignment). You’re not commuting; you’re time-travelling.

Between here and Quorn, the line threads the Pichi Richi Pass — rock cuttings tight enough to feel hand-made, stone bridges that have shouldered a century of weather, and views that turn first-timers into photographers. Search “Port Augusta to Quorn” or “steam train South Australia” and this is what the internet’s trying to show you. Trust the rails: they’ve seen more sunrises than all of us put together.

World-first bragging rights: The Coffee Pot

Forget the committee minutes. Remember this: The Coffee Pot is a heritage steam motor coach — ornate, Edwardian, over a hundred years old — and the Pichi Richi Railway bills it honestly as the last operating example of its kind in the world. That’s not marketing fluff; that’s trust architecture. Port Augusta’s not just a fuel stop — it’s a place that hides world-class secrets up the pass in Quorn.

Which train is which? (quick guide)

Services and dates change every year — always lock in the official timetable before you book accommodation. Here’s the cheat-sheet:

Seasonality: don’t get caught in January (or December) dreaming

Heritage trains don’t run every day of the year. The main operating season is typically roughly March through November, with extra runs around Easter and school holidays — but December–February is when disappointed guests show up having assumed a steam train works like a 7-Eleven. It doesn’t.

Before you book a room or a cabin: open the current timetable PDF and circle your dates. If the train’s not on, we’re still glad to host you — but if the train is on, you’ll want Crossroads Ecomotel locked in first.

Why we want you on the Afghan Express (and back with us after)

A full day on a vintage train is magic — it’s also wind, noise, excitement, and a lot of standing on platforms. Afterwards, nothing beats quiet, cool, modern comfort: eco-friendly build, rammed earth, solar, and a room that doesn’t rattle when the fridge kicks in.

Check the train timetable, grab your tickets, then book your stay at Crossroads Ecomotel so the only thing you’re racing is the sunset — not the next motel with a vacancy sign. Book online or call 0499 994 863. All aboard — we’ll save you a park.
